Getting To Know... Christina

Tell us about a transformative educational experience.

Days before I left to start my MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design, I lost my voice. I was sure it was just allergies so I continued packing. But two days later I still had no voice. I went to the doctor, they scoped my throat and discovered that my left vocal chord was paralyzed. I had contracted a virus that attacked the nerve that operated my chord and there was no treatment; the doctor told me to just wait it out and my body would get rid of the virus on it's own, but it would take some time. I left the next day for Savannah. The first week of classes was filled with auditions for all the shows being performed that quarter. I had absolutely no confidence in my ability to perform because my voice was so weak. That first week of classes was also the first time I met our Voice teacher, Vivian Majkowski. Over the course of ten weeks, Vivian used Fitzmaurice Voicework(c) to help me heal my damaged chord and not only return my voice to it's normal strength and vivacity, but push it even further. I became enamored of Voicework and have since decided to become certified. I will always be grateful to Vivian for helping through that very difficult time.

What about transformative professional experiences?

The summer after my freshman year of college I had the opportunity to be part of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. It was my first time working with professional actors and I learned so much from them over the three months I was there.

Why I do what I do...

Because there is no other option. This is what I'm meant to do.

What about ECT inspires you?

I love the way this company works. There is so much respect for the text, but at the same time, it's ok (and even encouraged) in the rehearsal process to throw the words out the window and "speak your truth." The production is constantly evolving because the actors are forever seeking truth. That's one of the things I love best about live theatre, the show is different EVERY night.

Where have you traveled? Where would you like to visit?

I've been almost all over the US, but my husband and I want to try to visit all the National Parks over the course of our lifetime. I've also been to the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, the UK, Italy, Greece, and most recently went on my honeymoon to Bali (I highly recommend it). Besides seeing all the National Parks, I want to explore the rest of Europe, South Africa, and more of the Mediterranean/Adriatic.

My favorite "day-off" event would be...

Taking my pups for a hike, catching up with East Coast friends, and going out with my husband to a restaurant we've never been to.

If I had one million dollars I would...

Pay off debt for me and my family and then use the rest to travel.

Did you know...

I was a competitive spring board diver from when I was 8 years old until I graduated high school.
