Shalyn Grow (Conservatory Artist)

She grew up in Jasper, Indiana, and in 2017 she graduated from Western Kentucky University with a B.F.A. in Performing Arts and a concentration in musical theatre. Some of her credits include Much Ado About Nothing (Beatrice), Guys and Dolls (Adelaide), God (Doris Levine) and Silver Night Entertainment's revues (Ensemble). She has also co-written and produced a one-act musical titled Miss Independent, as well as choreographed several musicals - ranging anywhere from Grease to Thoroughly Modern Millie. Shalyn is looking forward to the experiences to come while working with her fearless colleagues.

Hello there!

First of all, congratulations. You're about to embark on a very personalized, very intimate journey. As an artist, this is something we are constantly searching for. We go to auditions and hope that we'll walk into a room and find someone there who wants to create and learn and discover and play alongside us. Well, that's what this place is so go ahead and throw some confetti in the air and celebrate your discovery. Here's some advice that I wish I had received. I'm going to keep it short and succinct because we learn so much more through experience. The advice I have to give is more designed to put you at ease and help you get into the best mindset possible right off the bat.

1. You are safe here. No one here is going to exploit you. No one here is going to hurt you. You are not just a number. You are not just another actor. You matter and you will be treated that way. So go ahead and let your guard down as soon as you can.

2. Get to class an hour early. I'm dead serious. Show up at 9:30. It's a good habit to form. LA traffic is DISGUSTING and unpredictable. If you can get used to being an hour early for class for 6 weeks, then you will have set a tone for how you'll be with other jobs/auditions from here on out. Good practice and a valuable life lesson!

There you go. That's it! I'm only telling you two things. If you can really take these two things to heart, then you will be well on the road to setting yourself up for success at ECT. All other things are up to you. Your journey is special.

You've got this.

Getting To Know... Shalyn

Tell us about a transformative educational experience.

My first upper-level acting class in college was the final tipping point for me to realize that I love acting. I got to play Harper from Angels in America, and that was my first iconic dramatic character. I loved the drama and the intensity of performing the scene with my scene partner; and the intimate one-on-one time we got with our professor left me wanting more. I felt like I could really do this for a living after that.

What about transformative professional experiences?

I performed at a showcase with my school in NYC my senior year of college. My school invited agents and casting directors - mainly for feedback. I performed my set for some lovely people, and got some valuable feedback in return. I learned that they are interested in YOU and that they want you to dive deeper into what you do well and perfect it. Don't try to be just like everyone else, which is a great life lesson overall!

Why I do what I do...

I do what I do because story-telling is an ancient human art form, and it's value is infinite.

What about ECT inspires you?

I'm inspired by the people who are drawn to this place. Every person who commits to working here has a deep fundamental passion for theatre and aspires to create quality work. I feel like we're all on the same page.

Where have you traveled? Where would you like to visit?

I've traveled to Norway, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, England, Scotland, France, Mexico, and all over the US. I dream of going to Italy!

My favorite "day-off" event would be...

I want to be with my boyfriend and my friends doing absolutely nothing - just laughing our heads off and  enjoying each other's company.

If I had one million dollars I would...

I'd pay off me and all of my friend's student debt, and then pay for my sisters to go to college.

Did you know...

I'm told I remind people of Zoe Kazan.

My favorite movie is Brokeback Mountain.

I'm terrified of eels.

I've successfully crawled into two dryers.

I have a strong love for pugs and corgis.
